Coauthored with Linea Evans, Michal Engelman, and Kristen Malecki | Published in Social Science and Medicine, Volume 237, 2021 | Future social epigenetic research should prioritize larger, more diverse and representative population-based samples and employ the Social Determinants of Health framework to better inform the conceptualization of research questions and interpretation of findings. In particular, the simplified depiction of race/ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic status as individual-level characteristics should be updated with an explicit acknowledgement that these characteristics are more accurately interpreted as cues used by society to differentiate subpopulations.

Our research is the first to offer evidence on the timing of changes in the slavery-inequality relationship, and to identify how these changes differ across states. Project site here.
Coauthored with Max Besbris and Brenden Beck | Forthcoming in Socius, Summer 2024 | Using sequence analysis techniques, this manuscript explores the temporal relationship between increasing home values and increasing segregation. Results suggest not just that MSAs with high home values are more segregated, but that as MSAs increase in average home value, increasing racial segregation follows.
